The basics

After the baby, you matter too

So much attention goes to a new baby that a mother’s own recovery is often overlooked — but the weeks after birth (the postpartum period) are a genuine healing time. Your body is recovering from pregnancy and delivery, your hormones are settling, feeding is being established, and your emotions can rise and fall. All of this is normal, and all of it deserves care. In Hindi this time is well known as the "jaccha-baccha" period.

Good postpartum care checks that you’re healing well, supports feeding, catches anything worth treating early — and looks after your emotional wellbeing, not just the physical. Dr. Agarwal makes sure the person who just did something extraordinary is cared for too.

Please seek care promptly if…

Call the same day for heavy bleeding (soaking a pad an hour), a high fever, severe tummy or wound pain, a hot painful breast with fever, or severe headache or swelling. And your mind matters as much as your body: some ups and downs (“baby blues”) are common in the first days, but if low mood, hopelessness or anxiety linger beyond two weeks or feel overwhelming — and especially if you ever feel unsafe or have frightening thoughts — please reach out straight away, to Dr. Agarwal, someone you trust, or a doctor. You deserve support, and help works.

Questions women ask

Postpartum care — your questions

When should I have a postpartum check-up?

A check in the weeks after delivery is ideal — sooner if you have any concern like heavy bleeding, fever, wound trouble, feeding problems or low mood. It’s a chance to make sure you’re healing well in body and mind.

How much bleeding after delivery is normal?

Some bleeding that gradually lessens over a few weeks is normal. Soaking a pad an hour, passing large clots, or bleeding that suddenly increases needs to be seen the same day. When in doubt, call.

Is it normal to feel low or tearful after birth?

Some ups and downs (“baby blues”) in the first days are very common. If low mood, hopelessness or anxiety lasts beyond two weeks or feels overwhelming, that’s common too — and very treatable. Please reach out; you deserve support, and help works.

Can you help with breastfeeding problems?

Yes — with latching, supply, and sore, engorged or infected breasts. Dr. Agarwal offers practical, kind help and supports whatever feeding choice is right for you and your baby.

When will my periods return, and what about contraception?

It varies, especially with breastfeeding. Dr. Agarwal will explain what to expect and, if you’d like, help you choose contraception that fits this stage — including options that are safe while breastfeeding.

I had a C-section — is recovery different?

Yes, a C-section is major surgery and the wound needs particular care. Dr. Agarwal checks your healing, helps with comfort and movement, and tells you what to watch for.
