The basics

Remove the uterus — through the vagina

A vaginal hysterectomy removes the uterus through the vagina, with no cut on your abdomen at all. "NDVH" stands for non-descent vaginal hysterectomy — it simply means this route can be used even when the uterus hasn’t slipped down (prolapsed). Because there’s no external wound, most women have less pain, a shorter hospital stay and a noticeably faster recovery than after open (abdominal) surgery.

A hysterectomy is a big decision, and it isn’t the first answer to most problems. Dr. Agarwal suggests removing the uterus only when it’s genuinely the right step — usually when heavy bleeding, pain or fibroids haven’t settled with medicines or a uterus-preserving option, and your family is complete. Where the uterus can be kept, she’ll say so.

When a vaginal hysterectomy is worth considering

When heavy or prolonged bleeding, ongoing pelvic pain or pressure, fibroids or adenomyosis haven’t improved with medicines or simpler surgery — and when you’ve completed your family or keeping the uterus isn’t suitable. If the uterus can be preserved, that’s always discussed first.

The difference

Vaginal vs open hysterectomy

Same operation, a gentler route — when it’s suitable.

No external cuts

The uterus is removed through the vagina, so there’s no wound on your abdomen and no visible scar.

Faster, gentler recovery

Less pain, a shorter hospital stay and a quicker return to daily life than after open surgery.

Ovaries kept where possible

The ovaries can usually stay, so your hormones continue as before and surgical menopause is avoided.

At the clinic

What to expect

Assessed carefully, explained fully, recovered quickly.

Whether the uterus can be removed vaginally depends on its size and mobility and on any past surgery. Dr. Agarwal checks this on a scan and examination, and talks you through the plan before anything is decided.

Scan & assessment

An ultrasound and examination confirm whether removal is needed and whether the vaginal route is suitable for you.

A clear plan

The route, whether your ovaries are kept, what recovery looks like, and the cost — all explained before you decide.

The procedure

Under anaesthesia, the uterus is removed through the vagina, with no cut on the abdomen. Rarely, a laparoscopic or abdominal step is needed for safety.

Recovery & follow-up

A short hospital stay, simple aftercare, and a review to confirm healing and answer anything that comes up.

Your care

Care that protects your wellbeing

Relief from the symptoms, with your hormones and recovery in mind.

End the heavy bleeding

Removing the uterus ends heavy, draining periods and the anaemia and tiredness that so often come with them.

Keep your hormones

Where the ovaries can stay, they keep producing hormones as before — so a hysterectomy alone doesn’t bring on menopause.

Back to life sooner

With no abdominal wound, recovery is usually measured in weeks, not months — so you return to your family and work sooner.

A hysterectomy is a considered decision, not a first step. Dr. Agarwal will always tell you whether your uterus can be kept. If removal really is the right choice, the vaginal route — where suitable — is the gentlest way to do it.

Questions women ask

Vaginal hysterectomy — your questions

What is NDVH (non-descent vaginal hysterectomy)?

It’s the removal of the uterus through the vagina even when the uterus hasn’t slipped down (prolapsed). The whole operation is done through the vagina, so there’s no cut on your abdomen — which usually means less pain and a faster recovery than open surgery.

Will I have a scar?

No visible one. Because the uterus is removed through the vagina, there’s no wound on your abdomen and no external scar. Any stitches are inside and dissolve on their own.

Will my ovaries be removed too?

Usually not. The ovaries can generally be kept, so they carry on producing hormones and the surgery doesn’t bring on menopause. If there’s a specific reason to remove them, Dr. Agarwal will explain it and discuss it with you first.

Can the operation always be done vaginally?

Not always. Whether the vaginal route is suitable depends on the size and mobility of the uterus and on any previous surgery. This is checked on a scan and examination; occasionally a laparoscopic or abdominal step is needed for safety, and that’s discussed with you beforehand.

Will I still get periods, or be able to get pregnant?

No. Once the uterus is removed, periods stop and pregnancy is no longer possible. That’s exactly why the decision is made carefully — and why, if your family isn’t complete, uterus-preserving options are always considered first.

How long is recovery?

Most women go home within a couple of days and feel much better within two to three weeks, avoiding heavy lifting for a little longer. Recovery is generally quicker than after open surgery because there’s no abdominal wound.

How much does the surgery cost?

The cost depends on the type of anaesthesia, your hospital stay, and whether any additional step is needed. Dr. Agarwal explains the full estimate during your consultation, before anything is decided — so there are no surprises.
